When paleontologist Mark Blum finds himself somewhat ostracized and running low of funding on a dig site at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro, he takes a handful of graduate students on a re-energizing hike up the mountain. Little does he know that the hike will not only give them new perspective, but also will provide them the breakthrough that modern technology has been preparing to manipulate for years.

The group finds an early human buried in the ice. With a team of the best scientists of the day, including the lovely Susan Striker, Mark can use the latest advances in science and technology to protect, manipulate, and ultimately communicate with this early human. But Mark is helpless to watch his great discovery thaw into delicate, decaying bits as colleagues try to preserve this one fragile piece of his career.

Henry Hermann has assembled a cast of intelligent, likeable characters who garner your sympathy from the start. It's not just the lonely Mark Blum that the reader wants to see succeed (despite the odds and embittered colleagues stacked against him). We also look at the creature he's pulled from the ice.

We see the 200,000-year-old caveman named Adda who is reduced to a mere brain floating in fluids and hooked up to electrodes and computers, fighting to survive long enough to tell his story. And we want to hear every detail as the complex story unfolds. We pull for Adda. We feel his emotions. We fight alongside him. We love the things he loves. We fear the things he fears.

What a gift Henry Hermann has for pulling us into the past within the blink of an eye. The parallels between Adda's life and Mark's are cleverly worked through the narration. How interesting to see Henry Hermann so subtly present man's struggles as unchanged on some base level even after 200,000 years. I applaud this author. This is science fiction at its best and I highly recommend Beginnings for readers of the genre.
